If you drink enough vodka, it tastes like love. Never have truer words been spoken. Ok, that’s a lie, I’m sure they have. Anyway. So Friday was Valentine’s Day, or as a friend of mine likes to call it: Single Awareness Day. I laughed off that comment, come on, it’s not that bad. I’ve never been a huge fan of Valentine’s Day. I alway think its a bit silly, but what girl doesn’t like to get roses and presents and taken out for dinner and just generally spoilt even if it is on a silly day?
It was my first Valentine’s Day as a single girl for quite a few years, and I wasn’t 100% sure what to expect. I planned a big night out with some other single ladies so we could party away the evening. Cue Beyonce’s Single Ladies as the theme song for the evening.
We started out at Oblivion. It was a traffic party. CRINGE. We lasted about half an hour at Oblivion with the most desperate people in Cape Town. It was tough. Then we headed to Sergeant Pepper, hoping to find more of a party-party, and less of a pity party. We got what we wanted. A few shots later and we all felt a whole lot better. The problem with Sergeant Pepper though, is that they close at 2am. And they turn the lights on so you really know that it’s time to leave. That kinda cute guy now looks a bit different in the bright light…
After Sergeant Pepper, we weren’t ready to call it a night, so off we went to Deco Dance. If you’ve ever wondered where to find all of the creepy people in Cape Town, head to Deco after 2am. It’s like the twilight zone. It’s scary.
After Deco Dance we ended up driving some friends home to Century City and watching the sunrise there. It was all very beautiful. Until we got dropped home at 7am and I realised that I had to be somewhere at 10am.
Anyway, what this Valentine’s Day made me realise is that it really is just another day. If you’re spending it with your boyfriend, or your friends, it really doesn’t make much of a difference. I think I had more fun this year than I’ve ever had on Valentine’s Day. It reminds me of a quote from Sex and The City:
Maybe our girlfriends are our soulmates and guys are just people to have fun with.
What did you do for Valentines Day? Hope that whatever you did, you had a great time and that you had just enough vodka to feel the love.
